OPEN GARDEN SCHEME APPOINTS NEW CEO

The Open Garden Scheme is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Barley as its new CEO. Richard succeeds the Scheme's long-serving CEO, Neil Robertson, who stepped down at the end of March.

Richard Barley is a well-known and highly respected figure in horticultural and botanical circles around Australia, with a long and distinguished career at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne (RBGM), where he is currently the Director, Melbourne Gardens.

The President of AOGS, Tamie Fraser, said that the Scheme was delighted to welcome Richard and his wife, botanical artist, Anita Barley, to the AOGS 'family'.

"Richard brings great knowledge, skills and experience to AOGS and we all look forward very much to working with him. We have been so lucky to have, first Neil, and now Richard at the helm to guide us to the next level of growth and success for the Scheme.

"I know I speak for all our garden owners, volunteers and visitors in saying how thrilled we are to have Richard joining us," she said.

Richard has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Horticulture) and was the recipient of a Winston Churchill Fellowship in 1999. He is currently the Convenor of the Botanic Gardens Australia New Zealand (BGANZ) Victoria State Committee and is a member of the Management Committee of the Garden Plant Conservation Association of Australia. He has also contributed to a number of advisory and steering committees in various horticultural areas.
