19 & 20 June
Phoenix - 14 Giles Street, Fannie Bay. A brand new garden rises from the remnants of an earlier one after the removal of the old dwelling and construction of a new home. Good planning and thoughtful design with a focus on colour and texture result in a wonderful modern tropical garden. Hibiscus, acalypha, bougainvillea, allamanda, euphorbia and ground orchids contrast with the architectural forms of yukkas, agaves and bromeliads.
3 & 4 July
Two Beautiful Bayview Gardens: An Asian Indulgence - 5 Bayview Boulevarde & Small and Fragrant - 1/16 Stoddart Drive. Two gardens in the harbourside marina suburb of Bayview show there's no limit to gardening pleasure and creativity in smaller spaces. An Asian Indulgence has strong Japanese influences complete with dry stone creek, traditionally placed rocks, bamboos and bonsai. Small and Fragrant features tropical orchids, bromeliads, unusual palms and fragrant flowering shrubs. A public park linking the two gardens overlooks the water and will be the location for refreshments and plant sales. A children's play gym in the park will help keep smaller garden visitors safely amused. Admission: $5 per garden or $8 for both.
31 July & 1 August
Hullaballoo - 9 Alstonia Street, Nightcliff. Thriving tropical suburban retreat with ginger, orchids, ferns, cycads, orchids, bromeliads, hibiscus - and much more. Secluded patios are perfect places to relax and feel part of this delightful small garden. Frangipanis and massed spider lilies ensure the front footpath looks its best and pots, pavers and mosaics add extra interest.
All gardens are open from 10am to 4.30pm, and admission is $6.00 (free under 18) unless otherwise noted.
