Out of the Scientist's Garden
A story of water and food
by Richard Stirzaker
Out of the Scientist's Garden is written for anyone who wants to understand food and water a little better - for those growing vegetables in a garden, food in a subsistence plot or crops on vast irrigated plains. It is for anyone interested in food, how it is grows and how the world feeds itself.
Although a practising scientist in the field of water and agriculture, Richard has written, in story form accessible to a wide audience, about the drama of how the world feeds itself. The book starts in his own fruit and vegetable garden, exploring the 'how and why' questions about the way things grow, before moving on to stories about soil, rivers, aquifers and irrigation. The book closes with a brief history of agriculture, how the world feeds itself today and how to think through some of the big conundrums of modern food production.
The book is full of information for gardeners on the challenge of growing food and feeding a family in the city and it covers plants, soil and rivers and the journey from hunter-gatherer to modern agriculture.
224 pages, softcover.
Priced at just $29.00 plus
$10.00 postage and handling.

Garden
of a Lifetime
Dame Elisabeth Murdoch at Cruden Farm
by Anne Latreille
Almost 80 years ago, Keith Murdoch gave his young bride a wedding present that
would be of very special significance throughout the intervening years, a small
grazing property on the outskirts of Melbourne. They called it Cruden Farm,
and it was here that their family grew up and this now world-renowned garden
evolved.
A born gardener, with a practical hands-on approach, an eye for beauty, and a passion for trees and flowers, Dame Elisabeth calls it her Garden of a Lifetime.
Written by noted journalist and author Anne Latreille, this lavishly colour-illustrated
book traces the history of the garden's creation and guides the reader around
its spectacular features, while entries for the months of the year give practical
hints on upkeep.
Softcover copies are priced at just $60.00 including
$10.00 postage and handling.
